Posted: 03 Sep 2012 02:36 AM PDT

Windows 7 is now the world's most popular desktop operating system, according to the August report from Net Applications.

In August, Windows 7 had a 42.76% market share, a fraction of a point more than Windows XP's 42.52%. Windows Vista sits at third place with a 6.15% market share, followed by Mac OS X 10.7 and Mac OS X 10.6 with 2.45% and 2.38%, respectively.

All in all, older versions included, Microsoft controls some 92% of the market.

It took three years for Windows 7 to become the world's most popular OS. Microsoft's desktop operating system, which was launched in October 2009, will soon be replaced by a newer version -- Windows 8.

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 10:56 PM PDT

Cruxcase has debuted a new keyboard case that turns your iPad into a laptop.

For $155, the Cruxskunk has a full-sized QWERTY keyboard with raised keys, Bluetooth connectivity to hook up to your iPad and a patent-pending hinge that allows for 360 degrees of rotation, according to the company's Kickstarter page. It is compatible with the newest iPad and the iPad 2.

Put together, the keyboard case and iPad combination is 19 mm tall -- slightly more than a Macbook Air at 17 mm. The Cruxskunk alone is 6 mm tall.

Super Sleek BMW Mouse is a Gamer’s Dream [VIDEO]

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 09:08 PM PDT

A futuristic-looking mouse designed by BMW Group DesignworksUSA, called Level 10 M, aims to change the gaming space. The makers write that comparing this gaming mouse to a basic gray mouse is like comparing a high-performance car to a family van.

The top part of the mouse, where a gamer's hand would rest, can be adjusted for both height and lateral inclination. Drilling in the top of the mouse allows for ventilation, cooling the player's palm. Made from an alloy that's also used in aeronautics and architecture, it has software that can read out DPi-rates for gaming visuals. And for those interested in aesthetics as well as function, the mouse lights…

YouTube Video Takes You on a Journey From Ages Zero to 100

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 08:34 PM PDT

A captivating YouTube video shows a montage of people from infancy to 100-years-old in mere minutes.

Filmed in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the video captures close-up shots of individuals' faces, as they state their ages out loud in Dutch.

It starts off with a newborn crying out, followed by a tight-lipped one-year-old (whose mother says "one" off-camera, presumably), but starts to pick up with a boy who sweetly says "twee" -- or "two" in Dutch.

YouTube user Filmersblog started filming in Amsterdam last October, asking people to say their ages in front of the camera.

"My aim was to 'collect' a group of 100 people, from age 0 to 100. At first my collection grew fast, but slowed d…

Romney Digital Director: Obama Running Facebook ‘Like It’s 2008′

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 05:30 PM PDT

Zac Moffatt, digital director for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, argues that Obama's digital team is running much the same playbook they did in 2008 -- something he believes will give the Republicans an online edge in 2012.

"Obama's campaign is still running their Facebook campaign like it's 2008," Moffatt tells Mashable when asked about Obama's reputation as the "social candidate." He compares the Democratic campaign to the historical rise and fall of successful technology companies.

"There's a belief among the mainstream that in [digital politics], when someone is good at one iteration, they'll be good at the next," he says. "If that was the case, Google wouldn't be adaptin…

Top 10 Comments on Mashable This Week

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 04:30 PM PDT

Between Samsung's losing verdict to Apple, a mysterious 100-year-old package from Norway and the president getting in on all the internet jokes, there were a lot of stories that Mashable's readers commented on this week.

The Reconnect Project, an initiative that aims to spur creativity with an online blackout, left our readers conflicted. Some thought it was a great way to tap back into what's important in our lives instead of staying isolated behind a computer screen, and others felt technology and the Internet aren't the root of the problem.

Google decided to promote advertising directly on its homepage for the first time, which left Mashable's Chris Taylor asking: Has Google j
