Apple Pays Chinese Company $60 Million for ‘iPad’ Name

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 02:43 AM PDT

Apple has agreed to pay Chinese Company Shenzhen Proview Technology $60 million for the name "iPad," The New York Times reports.

Apple has bought the iPad name in various countries from a Proview affiliate in Taiwan for $55,000 in 2009. However, a Chinese court ruled in December that Proview, which registered the iPad trademark in China back in 2001, still owns the name in China.

Proview had hoped to get as much as $400 million from Apple, but it agreed to settle for $60 million in order to pay its debts.

"The iPad dispute resolution is ended," the Guangdong High People's Court said in a statement, as Apple has already transferred the funds to the Court, apparently relieved that t…

How We’ll Really Use Google Glass [SUNDAY COMICS]

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 07:50 PM PDT

It's fun to imagine what life would be like with Google Glass over our eyes: How differently our environments would appear when perpetually augmented by a digital overlay, how seamlessly we would be able to receive, modify and transmit information without pulling out our smartphones.

That's the productive vision, anyways. As the below comic from The Joy of Tech illustrates, those who get their hands on a pair will probably have slightly more, ah, recreational uses for the technology.

This week, our readers told haters of Oreo's new campaign to stuff it, gawked (and geeked-out) over the Google I/O keynote and fretted about Facebook's privacy terms -- again. Clearly, there was much for our Mashable audience to discuss this week.

The biggest conversation surrounded the debate over Oreo taking a stand in favor of gay rights on its Facebook page. While some readers were glad to see such a well-recognized brand make a statement, others thought Oreo should stick to making cookies.

Facebook's acquisition of led many readers to wonder if Facebook was being less considerate of their privacy. Others were convinced that nothing has changed.

Remembering Nora Ephron: 5 Classic Movie Moments

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 05:05 PM PDT

"I'll have what she's having," When Harry Met Sally...

The success of this 1989 romantic comedy about a snarky friendship turned swoon-worthy romance made Ephron the woman to watch in Hollywood. This is arguably the most memorable scene from the film; the punchline marks many a Twitter homage to the late writer. As comedian @davidschneider wrote, "RIP Nora Ephron. All comedy writers are just ladies staring in awe at her talent from a nearby table, saying "I'll have what she's having."

Celebrated screenwriter Nora Ephron passed away on Tuesday night in Manhattan after a battle with leukemia. She was 71.

Hollywood colleagues and devoted audiences have taken to the web this week, posting remembrances and tributes to the scribe who paved the way for creative females in Tinseltown and beyond. As Ephron told a crowd of ambitious young women at Wellesley College during a 1996 commencement address, women in her generation weren't expected to do much of anything.

Evidently, that wasn't an option for Ephron. She was a director, journalist, blogger, novelist, playwright and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter. Her films, essays and novels each approached love -- and more oft…

8 Reasons Why Summer Is a Great Time to Job Hunt

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 04:25 PM PDT

It's summertime -- those carefree months when you put your sandal-clad feet up and sip a glass of lemonade in front of the ballgame. And it is certainly time to abandon that job search for a few months, right?

The perception that companies cut back on -- or even stop -- hiring in the summer is a myth. In fact, companies are filling positions at the same, if not an increased, pace during the hottest months of the year.

Conducting a job search during the summer can be tricky though, and it is important to avoid the biggest hazards for job seekers during the summertime: timing and schedules. Because of vacations -- your own as well as employees of the companies w…

‘Leap Second Bug’ Causes Glitches for LinkedIn, Reddit, More

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 01:23 PM PDT

After an extra second was added to the clock on Saturday to better align it with the Earth's rotation schedule, a whole slew of websites from LinkedIn, Foursquare and Reddit to Mozlila, Yelp and Gawker sites experienced technical issues.

Known as a "leap second," which is a basic one-second adjustment applied to the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to keep it up-to-date with solar time, the additional second added didn't sit well with various web servers.

For example, Reddit said it was having Java and Cassandra issues and Gawker's entire site network was down for about 45 minutes. Other sites such as Yelp and Stumbleupon also reported technical trouble.

Apple Bids Farewell to Paid Cloud Service MobileMe

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 11:17 AM PDT

Apple retired on Sunday its paid cloud service MobileMe, following a several year process led by former CEO Steve Jobs to pack up the product for good.

The company announced last year that it would be closing MobileMe and urged users to move their accounts to iCloud, Apple's first big push to unify its product lines with online storage.

For MobileMe users who haven't yet moved their files and photos to iCloud, data can still be retrieved -- Apple notes on its homepage that it has extended the deadline to move content. However, Mac users without memory to support OS X Lion needed to run iCloud will be unable to make the switch.

With Nexus 7, Google Finally Gets Android Tablets Right [REVIEW]

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 07:35 AM PDT

Google Nexus 7

The Nexus 7 is essentially Google's answer the the Amazon Kindle Fire -- a 7-inch tablet priced at $199 that's based around media consumption. In almost every respect, the Nexus destroys the Fire.

Click here to view this gallery.

This, Android fans, is the tablet you've been waiting for. Google's Nexus 7 finally nails it for Android tablets. It has an inviting design, excellent software, and the right components inside to keep it all running. Even better, it has the right price: $199, and that's even before the $25 in downloadable media you get if you preorder one.

The Nexus 7 is the Android media tablet the Kindle Fire was supposed to be. When the Kindle Fire debuted in the fall, it was a success because the price was just as right (also $199), but also because it did something Android tablets hadn't done very well until then: It put media consumption front and center, the home screen serving as a storefront for…

Close to 500 people participated in a flash mob in New York City's Hudson River Park for Social Media Day.

The performance was the brainchild of tech startup Urthecast, which aims to provide the first-ever HD streaming video of the Earth from space. Surprised tourists waiting in line for Hudson River cruises were taken aback as the participants, clad in orange, ran to the boardwalk and started dancing.

"They were all volunteers," said Jill Lennox, communications manager of the Urthecast, which helped organize the flash mob. "The Flash Mob of America coordinated it on Twitter and, and it spread by word of mouth."
